Today is week one of Advent. Last week I provide some background to the advent season and the meaning behind the advent wreath, with 4 candles and sometimes a 5th being white representing Christ. (If you missed it you can go to this link to find the post)
This week we light our first candle. Our Coming Hope! This first purple candle is known as the “Prophecy Candle”. Remembering of the prophets like Isaiah, who foretold the birth of Christ a coming savior.
“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14
This first candle represents HOPE! Expectation in anticipation of the Coming Messiah..
In the 1700s Philip Doddridge wrote the words to one of the oldest hymns today. One that is well-known in the Lutheran church still today. Take a break and listen to this song called “Hark the Glad Sound! The Savior Comes”
Papa, meet me in the waiting, the place where I long for what is not fully in view. Still my heart and give me the ability to know that You are near. I believe Your plans are good. I see it in the birth of Your only Son. Renew my confidence as I lift my eyes to You. Be glorified in my life during this season of expectation. Amen.
