Whats to come…

This week is the start of December and starts the first week of Advent. Advent is a time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus on Christmas day. The term is a version of the Latin word meaning “coming”. In our house we like to celebrate the advent season each year. I also always enjoy writing each year a little about how we can stop and take time in preparation for this time of waiting and time of new birth. Let me first start off with a little background on the Advent candles you will see through out this short study the next few weeks. the Advent wreath the candles are placed in is a circular garland of evergreen. This is representing “eternity”. The reason evergreen is used due to its rich color of green representing “life” and even more important the new life of Christ born on Christmas day. Depending on older vs. newer tradition depends on if there will be four or five candles. I like to use the newer tradition with five candles one being white known as the “Christ Candle” that sits in the middle of the others. Each candle represents an aspect of the spiritual preparation for the coming of the Lord, Jesus! In the Catholic tradition (Something that I learn a little about working for a short time in a Catholic school) they believe there are four candles because each are representing a thousand years, to total the 4,000 years from the time of Adam and Eve had until the birth of Jesus. So Advent starts the 4th Sunday before Christmas. This being Dec 3rd. Over the next few Sunday’s I will be posting a short Truth from scripture along with a song and prayer for us to look at during this time of waiting and preparing our hearts for Whats to come…
